Distinguished Educator, Dorothy Allen Friend, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023, surrounded by family in Lexington, KY.

Dorothy was born on January 8, 1926, in Prestonsburg, KY, to the late Edward L. and Anna Mayo Allen. Five cherished siblings preceded her in death: Jack Allen, Dick Mayo Allen, Geraldine Allen Tolbert, Anna Allen Neal, and Polly Allen Price along with best friend and cousin Marion Salisbury Clark.

Dorothy attended Centre College and graduated from the University of Kentucky with Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education. Her Rank 1 was in Education Administration. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority.

Dorothy began her lifelong career in education as a second-grade teacher at Arlington Elementary. Soon after, she was recruited to become the Principal of Ashland Elementary and in 1966; she was asked to become the Principal of Cassidy Elementary School and she led it for 23 years. She touched thousands of students’ lives with her kindness, compassion, humor, and strength. She gathered and served as a role model for an accomplished faculty. Dorothy said her proudest achievement was the development of an early-morning tutoring program that brought together students in need of extra help with volunteer role models from the community. Dorothy made a significant impact in the field of education by actively engaging as an officer in various local, state, and national educational associations. Dorothy completed her 35-year career with the Fayette County Public School System as an Assistant Superintendent.

Dorothy spent her retirement traveling the world, worshiping at Second Presbyterian Church, volunteering as a driver for Meals on Wheels, and doing the one thing she loved most: spending time with her family. The family would like to thank the loving support provided by Dr. John Borders, the Staff at the Legacy Reserve and her long-time friend and helper Kim Wise.

Dorothy (“Dottie” to her grand and great grandchildren) is deeply loved and missed.

She is survived by her two daughters: Susan Friend Harper (Dallam Jr.) and Gilva Friend Evans (Henry).
