Dorothy Lowther
Funeral Time: Friday, October 11th at 1:00PM
Dorothy Harriett Lowther age 98 went to her heavenly home on October 1, 2019.
Dorothy was born October 17, 1920 to Joseph and Lillian Hoppe in Brooklyn, NY and lived in Bayside Long Island, NY. She was baptized November 28, 1920 at Olivetti Memorial Church, NY and confirmed April 9, 1933 at Church of the Good Shepherd, Bayside Long Island. She graduated Bayside High School in 1939 and received a Correspondence Course Certificate from The Lutheran Bible Institute in 1957. She met her one and only love, George Robert Lowther, and later married him in 1941. George’s job took them all over the country and to the beautiful state of Hawaii, her favorite place in the world. From there they moved to Lexington, KY in 1973 and thereafter were divorced.
Dorothy enjoyed serving at Gethsemane Lutheran Church here in Lexington for many years. She was a member of the choir, the ladies circle, and worked on many craft projects for the church. She helped sew the banners that adorn the sanctuary. She made table decorations for every event. She crocheted snowflakes and crosses to sell at the church bizarres or to give away to friends or complete strangers. She was known to respond to the pastor during the sermon when he would ask a rhetorical question. She always had an opposing opinion as her way of bringing balance to a conversation. She loved to talk to anyone she could catch before leaving church. She was known for a beautiful smile and colorful outfits. She was gregarious, vivacious and a bit eccentric. She was very stubborn and set in her ways. After her divorce, she learned to be very independent and frugal. Growing up during the depression she knew how to get by on very little. Her motto was “throw nothing away” which explains how her house became a storehouse of large quantities of things she thought she could use for crafts. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her and would tell them as they parted ways “Bye, bye. May the Lord bless you real good!”

Dorothy is survived by her daughters Jean C. (Beeman) Burgoon Carroll, OH and Virginia E. (Norman) Lemaster Newark, OH; her sons George (Gayle) Minot, ND; Ernest Lexington, KY; Luke (Debbie) Lake Oswego, OR and Thomas (Douglas Cluxton) Columbus, OH.
She is also survived by 9 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren and sister-in-law Motome Hoppe, St. Louis, Missouri.

Dorothy was proceeded in death by her parents, siblings Joseph, William, Ernest, and George Hoppe

Funeral: Friday, October 11, 1 pm, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, viewing 1 hour prior to service. Interment at Lexington Cemetery, refreshments served afterwards at the church.
