Donald Putnam
Funeral Time: Friday, April 21st at 3:00PM
The outstanding life of Donald Butler Putnam, 80, long time resident of Elsmere Park, Lexington, KY, ended with grace and peace, April 6th, 2017 Don was born January 1937 in St. Petersburg, FL to Edith and Frank Putnam; attended school in West Palm Beach and met the love of his life, Nora Lee, at Palm Beach High. Don and Nora married August 1956, at Northwood Baptist Church in West Palm Beach, FL. He served in the U.S. Navy (1954-1959) as an aircraft navigator on the USS Yorktown. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and honorable discharge upon Reserve completion in 1963. Don began a 43 year career in the computer industry as a technician at RCA in FL then transferred to NJ to work as a Systems Analyst, completing a BS in Business Management at Rutgers University. In 1976 the family relocated to cleftRock Retreat Center, Mt. Vernon, KY. In 1980 he began a software development company that later became Greentree Applied Systems in Lexington KY, where he was President until 2004. His interests ranged from road rallies, baseball, reading, traveling, music, family, and UK basketball to enjoying beach life in Stuart, FL. Don’s real passion centered on social justice through church and community activism. He served as deacon at Trinity Baptist Church, was active in church Lay Renewal and taught in the Exceptional Sunday School Class. He was on the founding boards of Quest Farm a residential community for the intellectually disabled and RNOW a worldwide organization promoting cultural and racial reconciliation. He served as a leader with B.U.I.L.D Lexington an interfaith, grassroots organization working for community justice. He was a strong advocate at both state and federal levels for the needs and rights of people with intellectual disabilities. He was an active member of VOR a national advocacy organization for people with intellectual disabilities, served on the Kentucky HB144 commission, was the founder of KCFN representing families of all Kentucky care facilities and was serving as Vice Chair on the board of directors of Bluegrass.org. He served several terms as President of the Parents and Relative Organization at Bluegrass Oakwood where his son David received such excellent and wonderful care. He was always available as a fierce advocate, not only for David, but for all residents and their guardians. He is Survived by his wife of 60 years, Nora Lee Putnam, Lexington, KY; son Richard Putnam (Ruth) Paint Lick, KY; daughters Donna Slaboda (Ben) Athens, GA, Lee Ann Darby (Larry) Lexington, KY; son David Putnam, Somerset, KY; brother Keith Putnam Danbury, CT; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Friday, April 21st at 2:00 PM at Trinity Baptist Church, 1675 Strader Drive, Lexington, KY followed by a memorial service conducted by Dr. Richard Landon at 3:00 PM with a time of fellowship to follow. In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions to Trinity Baptist Church. Arrangements by Kerr Brothers. “Sail on! Faith that moves forward triumphs.” (Streams in the Desert 2/11).
